Winter Coat

Then it dawned on me. I could be in much worse shape. I could have gained 20 pounds. But I didn’t.

Revelation from the scale

I weighed myself and was surprised to see that I had added more than a few pounds this winter. Spring had sprung and I was ready to do the same, but now I had a winter coat that I wish I did not have.

Ugh. Seeing that number in the scale was a downer.

Generally, my aim is to prioritize health over looks. I do regard healthy weight and diet and exercise to be a key part of the equation.

Then it dawned on me. I could be in much worse shape. I could have gained 20 pounds. But I didn’t.

So in some ways I was doing great!

This may sound odd, but given the stress of my past year I likely could have gained two or three times the weight, and been less healthy. Cue lightbulb moment.

This is not an excuse to be unhealthy. Rather it is an honest acknowledgment of where I am at.

I am reminded of a favorite heroine, Bridget Jones, from Bridget Jone’s Diary by Helen Fielding. She was focusing on loosing weight and having healthier habits and she recorded her progress in her diary. But eventually she falls for a man who loves her “just as she is.”
