Reflections on what I needed in 2023
I showed up for myself in many different ways and ultimately realized that many of these acts were indeed “gifts.” Beyond the list of material items, some acts helped my mind, others my body, spirit, and soul. Like Doja Cat sings in Paint the Town Red, these gifts help me feel like: “She a bad lil’ b*tch, she a rebel/She put her foot to the pedal/It’ll take a whole lot for me to settle.”
#1. Peace of mind – This gift came from updating my will, general paperwork, power of attorney, etc., so that I know my wishes are expressed.
#2. Spiritual contemplation- This gift was more time for meditation and women’s groups, and general space for spiritual music and readings.
#3. Local causes – I joined groups that I care about and agree with their mission, the Audubon Society and the California Native Plants Society.
#4. Safety – I took care of car maintenance and health appointments.
#5. Stuff – I bought less, sorted what I did have, and helped a few family members address their stuff.
#6. Inspiration – I took a class to learn about herbal medicine, read inspirational books, and did a program to learn about manifestation.
#7. Time – To rest, sleep, exercise. I learned to ride a Peloton and spent time this fall playing soccer.
#8. Companionship – I got a rescue dog who lights up the room and is one of the best decisions I made this year.
#9. Release – I let the drifting friendships go, and said no to invites that didn’t feel uplifting.
#10. No – I spoke up, said no, drew boundaries, and asked for what I needed.
