First Date, Encore

One small step for dating, a giant leap for me

After daring myself to join a dating app, my next step was to land a date. No small thing I realize in hindsight.

It took me three months from joining the app to get from a match, step one, to a date in the real world, yet another step. Steps in between involved a brief chatting of very small talk via text, sprinkled with emojis. Then later a long(ish) phone call.

I had something to prove. To myself, my ex, my future boyfriend.

I wanted to show up for myself, I had something to prove. I needed to know that I could do it. Then something unexpected happened, I noticed that I was feeling excited. Interesting.

Did this mean that I had a crush? Did I like this strange new person? Or was I just awakening myself to the potential for love, and that was what made me tingle?

So I showed up. I did the date. I put in effort. I may have even flirted, granted so rustily I had to point out my jokes…And I had fun. No kissing. No major sparks. No red flags. But easy conversation. A good evening.

Isn’t that what a date should be?

“Ten Things You Shouldn’t Say on a Date.
1. You’re wearing that?
2. Something smells funny.
3. Where’s the Tylenol?
4. And to think, I first wanted to date your brother.
5. I have a confession to make…
6. My dad has a suit just like that.
7. That man is hot. Look at him.
8. My ex, may he rot in hell forever…
9. You’re going to order that? Seriously?
10. You’re how old?”
