It is fun to celebrate birthdays, weddings, and births with showers and gifts. However, many do not realize that those who recently went through a separation are also similarly starting a new chapter with new needs.
Time: Depending on the scenario, the separated person could likely use the gift of time. This could be help with the kids, help fixing a broken something in the house, or help moving. The offer of time can be just as kind even if the offer is not taken up.
Love: A listening ear and kind supportive words go a long way. Reaching out to schedule a phone call, a meet up for coffee, or a walk can be very meaningful.
Food: As new routines and most likely spaces are getting sorted out, food can be a challenge. Taking your friend out for a meal, bringing over a cooked meal or treat, or a gift card can all be excellent.
Money: For those who need to move, or who split household items, or just left them and are starting over, money can be very helpful. This can be for useful household items, or something equally useful, self care in the form of a massage or acupuncture.
A visit: A visit to their new home is an acknowledgment of both their new life and journey. Or assuming they did not have to move, a visit to the home they reimagined after the separation serves the same purpose.
A note: Letting someone know that you are thinking of them is one of the little things in life that reaffirms connection and belonging. As someone is venturing into new ways of doing life, a friendly note means a lot.
Flowers: Flowers always brighten a room, and even better is if they scent it too. The gesture of flowers is a lovely romantic expression, but also a simple pleasure of life that brightens the day. They can be delivered or given in person while on a visit. Depending on the person, a houseplant could also be a kind gesture.
